Floor is done. Cabinets in. All we're missing is the installation of the toilet and sink, carpet in the closet, hang the sconces, closet lights and shower door, some switches. Almost!!

Weekend in Walhalla

Most of you know that Betty and I spent last weekend in Walhalla and saw a bunch of family on the Butts' side. That's Aunt (Aint?) Ruth and Marshall above. 89 and 91, respectively.

Then there's Paula and John

Barbara, Liesl and Zack

Haley (also Liesl's)

Aunt Vera

Wayne and Wanda

and, of course, the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains

Making progress

Ok, so we're making progress. This is one of the cabinets built to custom fit our strange little place. There will be shelves and doors. More pics below. Today we got about half the tile around the bath and the first coat of paint after the primer. Drywall is obviously finished and all is in place except for the sink and toilet, which have to wait for the hardwood floor (still subfloor at this point.) Really starting to come together, though. Pretty exciting! We're hoping to have custody by the end of next week, but I am going to repaint the bedroom before we move back in-- we've decided it's several shades too dark.

Snow

OK, I promised you pics of the snow, so here you go. It's been really cold (in the teens the last several nights) and constantly snowing a bit, so these pictures, taken today, are after the third day in a row that I shoveled. I'm guessing around 5 inches overall. We're pretty much hunkered down! Enjoy.

It's coming along!

First, I should mention that we've had 5 inches of snow since Betty blogged on Jan 3. Sorry, no pictures yet, but I have shoveled the sidewalks and driveway twice. But that's another story. I'll try to remember to take pics tomorrow.

So, the pic above confirms the installation of the skylight in our new bathroom. Construction moves along (we've done a bit of waiting on the plumber), but today the tub and shower went in. Tomorrow we get more walls and the toilet installed. At that point, it comes down to tile, drywall and floors. We hope to be back in our master BR by the end of the month, maybe sooner. Cool!

For those of you that might not know, we bought a house in Shelbyville that was built in 1914 or 15 as a 2 BR, 1.5 bath home. Along the way, a shower has been added to make it 2 full baths, one up, one down. So, we've taken out a small walkin closet off the MBR and pushed out into the attic space. See more in progress pics here.

Brrrrrrrr

January 3, 2010

I knew there would come a time when we would smack our foreheads and say: "What were we thinking????" leaving Mexico for colder climes. Yes, today might be one of those times. The sun is brilliant but there's absolutely no warmth in it whatsoever, but fortunately no moisture either. It's 7 degrees F (-4 C)and bone dry. We've spent the last few days snuggled inside with both dogs and both cats. We bought an electric fireplace for the family room, which is really an electric heater/blower dressed up very nicely. Because this room can be closed off from the rest of the house, we can get it pretty toasty.
It looks something like this:

We've been reading, watching movies. Bob watched the University of Louisville/University of Kentucky basketball game on TV yesterday. In KY, this game takes on the importance of the Super Bowl. I watched a couple of movies on my laptop, peeking around the corner to catch a glimpse of the action now and then. Oh......UK won.

We may venture out into the wider world of 2010 today. Time for some replenishments.
